As an adult I look at my coffee mug and realize that, even though there are some scary aspects of the Wonder Woman cartoon (yikes with the Barbie-shaped body and I’m sure if I were to watch re-runs of the t.v. show there’d be tons of ick-ish sexist stuff going on), Wonder Woman was still doing something archetypal for the just-budding goddess in me. She was strong, courageous and always knew just what to do. When I travel back to that child self watching her on t.v., I get a powerful sense of strength – loving the strength of her.

I’ve had some changes in my business recently that have put me in completely new territory. It’s exciting andalso scares the be-jeezus out of me. It’s required me to call on the pure essence of strength and power and courage. Strength for no other reason than to simply be strong and steady. I bought the Wonder Woman mug a couple of months ago, as a silly gag gift to myself. But I’ve insisted on keeping it next to me on the desk every day as I work on the computer. I thought it was just for fun, but gee, ya think there might be a deeper reason?!

Now for the part where YOU get your goddess on: For this month’s version of this ritual, I decided to research Greek Goddesses. Even though I’m more partial to the Celtic ones, for some reason today’s post is calling for the Greek ladies. Take a look at the list below and choose which quality you’d like to bring into your business this week. Then add a comment telling us your goddess of choice, plus any other reflections that you want to include.

Artemis – strength & courage

Athena – strategist, diplomat, intellectual wisdom

Persephone – death & re-birth

Demeter – fertility, harvest

Hecate – wild places, crossroads, the in-between

Aphrodite – beauty, love, sensuality

Eos – dawn, budding hope of a new day

Hestia – warmth, tending the hearth

Baubo – bawdiness! (I couldn’t find much on her, but had to put her in here!)

Eirenne – balancing, stabilizing, peacemaker

Nike – the personification of victory

Rhea – flow, ease

“Begin living again.” What does that mean anyway? I’ve been fighting being sick because it’s meant the horror of all horrors – not being able to run on 100% of my energy. Only being able to show up from a place of 70%, sometimes 50%. Not being able to stand the idea of being in the world at 50%. But last week I started looking at why that is so intolerable. And I noticed an internal rule: “It’s unacceptable to show up in the world any less than 100% – glowing, ‘on’, excited, inspiring to others… Amazing.”

Well now, that’s a tall order, eh? And I think it’s pretty funny that throughout so much of my life I walked around thinking I was actually doing pretty well at that goal. Because this kind of “Amazing-ness” isn’t the real kind – the quiet kind that lives within all of us all of the time. It’s more of a shiny thing – “Hey look at me! Look at all the great things I’m doing. Don’t you love me?”

What a heavy, heavy weight this is. A very goofy strategy to get love. Now exposed, it’s kind of like “Duh?!” So… time to adopt a different strategy – feeding the quiet, still, absolutely satisfying amazing within. Just for me. Just because it feels good. This kind of “amazing” has no criteria, it’s simply the ability to accept what is, whatever that may be in the moment, and let it fill me up. From this place, 50%, heck 20% is just as Amazing as 100%. Maybe not as fun, but still okay. Rather than an instrument of torture, “amazing” becomes beautiful, an acceptance of exactly where you are. That’s a really big load off. And even though I’m still sick, I’m actually beginning to feel like I’m living again.

But wait – this is a blog not just about soul, but about business too. So what does this have to do with my business? Everything. It strips away an ick-factor in my business. The motivation to create an Amazing business so that people will love me. That’s been just a fraction of the whole picture, but nevertheless it’s been there and it gets in the way of simply being of service.

It’s easy to get knocked off-center by mid business week – from intense work which can tip you off balance, or because of roadblocks that you encounter while trying to get things done, or because of inner demons like worry, self-doubt, etc. To re-anchor in your center before things get way off track, recognize one Demon that has been tripping you up this week, then name a Strength that you can call on to help you. I woke up today to a sunny morning and it had that feeling of the seasons turning. We’re still in winter, but the sun is rising earlier and earlier and it reminds me that since Solstice was a few weeks ago, we are now headed back toward the light. I’m all for diving into the dark (cuz ain’t that always where the best hidden gifts are found), but I have to say that my heart always heaves a sigh of relief when headed back into the light.
